Using a Rockwell hardness tester, we can determine the yield strength of each individual joint of pipe and sort and inventory accordingly. The Rockwell hardness tester utilizes a conical diamond known as a brale and indicates hardness by determining the depth of penetration of the diamond under a known load. We call this “pinging” the pipe. The depth of penetration corresponds to a relative position on a scale which in turn allows us to determine the yield strength of the pipe.
